Memphis Stump Grinding
Tree's gone but the stump is still sitting in the yard?
We grind stumps across Memphis and surrounding areas. Call (901) 979-4150 and tell us how many you have and how wide they are.
Grinding is not full stump removal
They are two different jobs.
Grinding
cuts the stump down below the surface into chips. The roots stay in the ground and break down over time. Most yards only need this.
Full removal
digs or pulls out the stump and its main roots. It leaves a big hole and takes a lot more work.
If you plan to build or pour something right on the spot, say so when you call, because that may mean full removal instead.
How grinding is priced
- Diameter. Wider stumps take longer. It is the main thing that sets the price.
- A minimum charge. Even one small stump costs something, because the job still has to be set up.
- Access. A narrow gate, a slope or a stump behind a fence takes more work.
- Roots. Big surface roots spreading out from the stump add to the job.
- What is close by. A stump against the house, a wall or a walk needs more care.
For a rough range, use the tree cost calculator.
How to measure your stump
Measure across the widest part of the stump at ground level, where the roots start to flare. Then pick the band it falls in:
- Up to 12 in
- 13 to 24 in
- 25 to 36 in
- 37 to 48 in
The calculator and the quote form use these same bands. A stump wider than 48 in is quoted after inspection.
What happens to the grindings
Grinding leaves a pile of chips and soil where the stump was. The grindings may stay, filling the hole, or be hauled off for a charge. Topsoil is extra too. Settle which one you want on site, before the grinding starts.
Call 811 before any digging
Tennessee 811 asks that you call 811, or put in a homeowner ticket, at least 3 working days before any digging. A ticket is good for 15 calendar days. Private lines are not marked, so tell us about any buried lines you know of. Start at Tennessee 811's homeowner page.
