Memphis Tree Removal
Got a tree that's dead, leaning, or just too big to keep next to the house?
We take trees down across Memphis and surrounding areas. Call (901) 979-4150 and tell us which tree.
When removal beats trimming
Trimming works on a tree that is still sound. Removal is for one that isn't. Signs it may be time:
- It is dead or dying. No leaves in the growing season, bark falling off, big dead limbs up top.
- It has started to lean. A new lean, or soil lifting at the base, can mean the roots are giving way.
- The trunk is damaged. Deep cracks, hollow spots, or a split where two main stems meet.
- A storm broke it. A snapped top or a split trunk rarely recovers. A single torn limb may only need trimming. If the tree is on the house, see emergency and storm damage.
- It is in the way. Roots lifting a drive, or a trunk crowding the house or a new addition.
Not sure which you have? Describe it on the form. If trimming will do, we'll tell you. See tree trimming.
What moves the price
- Height. A taller tree means more cutting, more lowering and more wood to move.
- Access. A tree in an open front yard is simpler than one behind a fence or between houses.
- What is close by. Near the house, a fence or power lines, a tree has to come down in pieces, lowered one at a time.
- A crane. Some large trees, or trees over a roof, need one. It is added only when the site calls for it.
- Haul-away. Taking the wood and brush away is part of the price. Keeping the wood yourself changes it.
- The tree's condition. Dead or storm-damaged wood can be harder to work with.
For a rough range by size, use the tree cost calculator. The real price comes from looking at the tree.
Trees near power lines
If the tree is near the lines on the poles, it may be MLGW's to handle. MLGW removes a tree when its trunk is within 10 to 15 ft of the pole line, depending on the voltage, and is endangering it. With the owner's written consent, it also removes dead or diseased hazard trees there.
What MLGW does not do: remove trees because they interfere with service drops, the lines from the pole to your house. Those trees stay the owner's to deal with. MLGW's tree trimming page has the details.
What happens to the wood
The City of Memphis says yard waste contractors, such as tree trimmers, must remove all the waste their work creates. So the wood and brush from a removal don't go to the curb for City pickup. They leave as part of the job, unless you choose to keep them.
If you are trimming small stuff yourself, City of Memphis curbside rules apply. Tree debris has to be under 5 ft long and under 13 in across, and bulk piles can be up to 10 cubic yards. Weekly yard waste is up to half a cubic yard, bagged, and limbs go in a separate pile at the curb, within the size limits above. Check the City's household garbage page and solid waste page before you set anything out. These rules are for the City of Memphis only.
The stump
Taking a tree down leaves a stump. Grinding it is its own job. See stump grinding.
