Memphis Tree Trimming and Pruning
Limbs hanging over the roof, scraping the car, or dead branches waiting to drop?
We trim and prune trees across Memphis and surrounding areas. Call (901) 979-4150 and tell us what the tree needs.
Trimming, pruning or removal?
The words get mixed up. Here is how we use them.
Trimming.
Cutting growth back to clear a roof, a driveway, a sidewalk or the street.
Pruning.
Picking which branches to take so the tree grows stronger. Thinning a crowded crown, taking out crossing limbs, and removing deadwood.
Removal.
The whole tree comes down. Trimming only makes sense if the tree is sound. If it isn't, see tree removal.
MLGW and the lines
MLGW says about 40% of its outages are caused by trees, so it trims along its lines on a cycle. A few things to know:
- It cuts for growth. MLGW may not come back for 3 to 5 years, so it cuts far enough to allow for regrowth. The result can look heavy.
- You get notice. MLGW leaves a courtesy notice 4 to 5 days before the work.
- Don't trim near the lines yourself. MLGW says not to attempt any tree work if lines are near. Leave those limbs to MLGW.
- Big trees are on the owner. MLGW's FAQ says owners of very large trees are responsible for trimming them.
For the rest, see MLGW's tree trimming page. Limbs away from the lines, over the house or the yard, are the kind of trimming we do.
Sidewalks and streets
In Germantown, the property maintenance rules call for limbs trimmed to 8 ft above sidewalks and 12 ft above streets. In Bartlett, Code Enforcement wants notice before work on the right-of-way. Other towns have their own rules, so check with your city.
Topping
Topping means cutting the top off a tree, leaving stubs. Bartlett prohibits it on public and street trees and strongly discourages it on single-family lots. It is not something we offer. If a tree has grown too tall for its spot, thinning and reduction cuts are the usual answer, or removal if it can't be kept.
What moves the price
- Height. A small ornamental tree is a short job. A tall oak is a bigger one.
- How much comes off. Light deadwood removal is less work than a full thinning.
- What is under it. Limbs over a roof or a line have to be lowered, not dropped.
- Access. Whether the tree can be reached easily, or it all has to be done by climbing.
- Cleanup. In the City of Memphis, tree trimmers have to remove the branches they cut. Confirm on site whether hauling is in the price and what else is covered before the work starts.
